Zippy's school

I'm so late to the game. I just sorted out that the local elementary school is about 3 blocks from our new house, which really makes me happy - this means that we will be able to walk Zippy to school next year when she starts kindergarten. My guy apparently told me this in the very recent past, but somehow I didn't process that information. I'm such a dork.

I'm a little bummed that she won't be able to start this year -- but the cut off birthday for kindergarten is September 1, and Zippy's birthday isn't until September 21.

I do need to find some sort of preschool program for her - and I need to call the special education folks (the High Desert ESD) tomorrow to see if there's a preschool that does speech therapy. She'd qualified to do a preschool program this past year in California, but we weren't quite ready to let her go. (Another reason that we decided to keep her out of the program this past year is that we felt like the staff at the local school thought she was less intelligent than we know she is. She's a late talker, but that doesn't mean she isn't smart - my brother was the same way, and trust me, he's way too smart!)

When we moved to Marin County, our daughter was just past the cutoff age. We asked if there was anything we could do, and the principal sat down with Debbie and interviewed her and said, "Okay."

He asked what she liked to do, and asked her about the book she had with her that she was "reading" (some dinosaur book we'd read to her too many times to count).

Maybe that would work for you here.

Stinky was just after the cutoff too (Sept 26). JJ is among the oldest in her class too (she repeated a grade). I think it actually works out better that they are among the oldest, not the youngest.

For preschools check out the Central Oregon Family News. The papers can be found around town or they have a website (www.cofamilynews.com).

Dave, unfortunately Deschutes County requires that speech ability be at the 95th or higher percentile for early admission to kindergarten, and Zippy's nowhere near that level of speech. Thank you for the idea, though!

Eric, too smart for your own good, and much else. ;) Love you too.

Jen, glad to hear that being among the oldest has worked out for both Stinky and JJ - I hope it will for Zippy too! And thanks for the pointer on finding preschools in the area!
